Summer Time!

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? (Sonnet 18) by William Shakespeare

Galveston, TX

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate.
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer’s lease hath all too short a date.
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimmed;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance, or nature’s changing course, untrimmed;
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st,
Nor shall death brag thou wand’rest in his shade,
When in eternal lines to Time thou grow’st.
So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

Ahh summer. Summer time has always been a special time for me. It was the end of the school year and time for the public pool, watermelon (sandia), and riding my bike everyday when I was a young girl in West Texas. My first summer in college I went to drum corps, and spent the next 5 out of 8 years playing in the Star of Indiana organizations (corps, brass theater, blast!). In grad school (DMA) I became interested in summer festivals and attended a few including Aspen. Now as a college professor I view summers as a time for projects, travel, and in general a time to recharge the batteries.  This summer will include a myriad of activities including a solo competition, performances with the Frank Simon Band in Cincy, visiting family in Texas, rehearsing with drum corps, and practicing and preparing for the 2010-11 school year at NKU.

The solo competition I will be competing in is the Susan Slaughter Solo Competition. It is part of the International Womens Brass Conference (IWBC) held in Toronto, Canada. I’ve never been to Toronto but I hear they have beaches! I will also be playing with the Frank Simon Band this July at a few concerts, should be great concerts, please check my events page for more info. My summer will consist largely of drum corps activities. I will be rehearsing and performing with Star United as we prepare for a concert with the Bloomington Pops Orchestra and the 2010 DCA competition.  We will be competing in the mini-corps competition at DCA in Rochester, NY. I will also take part in the DCA solo, duet, trio competitions with some friends.

I will also rehearse with the Star of Indiana Alumni Drum and Bugle Corps as we prepare for a performance at the 2010 DCI Semi-Finals competition. We will perform an exhibition performance of some of Star’s music from past years. The music is awesome and seeing everyone again after 15+ years has been amazing! It should be a great night! And lastly, I will join Blue Stars for a week in Texas as they perform some shows. The music is amazing so far and I can’t wait to see some drill!

Next year is starting to take shape with some performances and projects that I will talk about in a later post. Thanks for visiting my little home on the web, I like to update often and look forward to making many blog posts this summer. Please come back! I will be reviewing some recent electronic purchases (H2 zoom, Kodak Zi8 HD Pocket Video Camera). I will also post about my adventures in buying a new car and laptop.
